Temple Gates of Prayer Presents: The United States of America and The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: A difficult past; A promising future?
Tuesday, March 21, 2023 • 28 Adar 5783
8:00 PM - 10:50 PMZoomJoin us as we welcome Mark Medin and Rachel Smith-Levy (in dialogue with Rabbi Hammerman) as we explore issues related to the United States/Saudi relationship, including the Kingdom's present relationship with the State of Israel and the American Jewish community.
Mark D. Medin is the Executive Vice President of UJA-Federation of New York. In June of 2022, Mark joined 13 Jewish leaders from the United States on a (first-of-its-kind) trip sponsored by an NGO that explores interfaith dialogue and combats Islamic Extremism.
Rachel Smith-Levy, who grew up at Temple Gates of Prayer (daughter of Susan and Barry Smith), is a U.S. Foreign Service Officer at the U.S. Department of State. She is currently serving as a Political Advisor at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations*. Beginning in the Summer of 2023, she and her family will relocate to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where she will take up her next posting at the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh as the Embassy Spokesperson. Rachel's 17-year career at the State Department has included postings in Tel Aviv, Prague, Amman, Washington, and New York.
We look forward to an evening of *off the record* discussion and exploration of one of the more interesting sets of relationships within our interconnected world. We will also get a glimpse of life in the U.S. diplomatic corps and what it's like to be a Jewish diplomat serving in the Arab world.
