From the Rabbi's
Desk..
The past month or two have been among the most unsettling, troubling and disturbing times I have experienced in the twenty-six years of my tenure at the Temple. Those of you who were at the meeting of the Congregation this past Sunday, April 23rd , heard a full report from our President of the nefarious attempt to interfere with and derail the sale of some of our Temple property. The details of this attempt are quite well known and are too outrageous to review here. Suffice it to say that the continued existence of the Temple has been seriously jeopardized. I pray that by the time you read this, sometime at the beginning or middle of May, there will be a favorable resolution of this affair. We hope that the sale of part of our parking lot will have been consummated and that we can "go on with our life" continuing to do what Temples are meant to do...creating the environment and opportunities for our congregants to experience the fullness and richness of Jewish life.
I have been teaching Pirkei Avot this year on Wednesday evenings. It has been a truly wonderful learning and sharing experience for me as well as for all the participants. The current situation in our Temple leads me to appreciate more than before the advice offered by Rabbi Shimon. Rabbi Yohanan ben Zakkai asked his disciples "which attribute of character should one pursue and cultivate in life"? Rabbi Shimon, one of the disciples, suggested that the best attribute would be "to foresee the consequences of your actions". Some would call that 'foresight', others would call it 'acting responsibly'...both conspicuously absent in this unfortunate affair.
The decision to sell part of the property was not taken lightly or easily. In fact it was an agonizing and painful decision, but one that was truly necessary. Our officers and trustees fully realize the import of this sale and have already taken steps to see to it that any inconvenience will be minimized. Even as I write, an architect is already redesigning our parking area.
This temple, one hundred and six years young, is determined to live...and we shall!
